Event Details
Marco Beasley, a specialist in Renaissance music, joins forces with Constantinople to celebrate, in music, a bridge that Leonardo da Vinci designed in 1502. The longest and boldest bridge of the time, it was to span the Bosporus and thus link Europe and Asia. But it was never built; the plans, however, were preserved in the artist’s archives. Five centuries later, Tabassian re-imagines this bridge with the help of 16th- and 17th-century works from the manuscript archives of the national libraries of Istanbul and Florence.

This concert is a cry of hope and freedom inspired by one of the world’s most fascinating civilizations, Iran.
While the refined gardens of Shiraz and mosaics of Isfahan have contributed to its storied reputation, this culture dating back several millennia is also famed for its remarkable musical and poetic production, which has always transcended the vicissitudes of history. A hymn to the richness and beauty of this culture, Songs of Hope features virtuoso musicians, bearers of its traditions. Constantinople returns following last year’s sold-out performance at the Elora Festival!
Between sea and mountains, between modes and polyphony — Clair-obscur is born of the desire for deeper dialogue on the part both of the musicians of Constantinople and the singers of A Filetta, the preeminent ensemble of Corsican polyphony. They have created a poetic and musical suite, mixing polyphonies created by the well-versed singers of A Filetta with songs and tunes composed and arranged by Kiya Tabassian. A profoundly touching concert.

Even if more than 600 years separates the life of John-Sebastien Bach (1685 -1715) and Omar Khayam (1048 -1131), these two genius were made to meet each other. Their visions of the world, as a perfect match of mathematics mastery and a super high level of spirituality, bring these two men in a delightful dialogue and traces a clear path to the sublime. In this program Constantinople brings these two artists into a dialogue, where the sacred and spirituality transcend borders. For this new creation Constantinople proposes arrangements of some of the most beautiful spiritual songs and arias of JS Bach in dialogue with poems of Omar Khayyam sung in Persian and responding to Bach’s songs.
