Event Details
Between sea and mountains, between modes and polyphony — Clair-obscur is born of the desire for deeper dialogue on the part both of the musicians of Constantinople and the singers of A Filetta, the preeminent ensemble of Corsican polyphony. They have created a poetic and musical suite, mixing polyphonies created by the well-versed singers of A Filetta with songs and tunes composed and arranged by Kiya Tabassian. A profoundly touching concert.

Event Details
This collaboration sprung out of a profound interest to explore the sounds and musical gestures of Nordic music. Virtuoso and champion of the Hardanger fiddle, Benedicte Maurseth joins Constantinople to create music strongly influenced by nature and the spectacular landscapes of the North as well as by the evolving relationship of human beings with the natural world. Together, through a “North-South” dialogue, they paint a picture-in-sound that engages the imagination and transports the listener into exquisite and profound worlds of well-being.

Following in the footsteps of Rumi was a journey marked by remarkable encounters. First, eight centuries ago, there was the meeting in Damascus between Mowlana (‘my master’) Jalaleddin Rumi (1207-1273) and his own master, the great philosopher and poet Ibn Arabi. Then there was the moment when musician Kiya Tabassian first encountered the immensely influential work of Rumi. Finally, there was the moment when Tabassian found a singer with the ideal voice for bringing Rumi’s intoxicating and timeless songs back to life. This last encounter, following in the luminous footsteps of Rumi and ignoring all borders en route, has produced some fiercely vivid music.

Marco Beasley, a specialist in Renaissance music, joins forces with Constantinople to celebrate, in music, a bridge that Leonardo da Vinci designed in 1502. The longest and boldest bridge of the time, it was to span the Bosporus and thus link Europe and Asia. But it was never built; the plans, however, were preserved in the artist’s archives. Five centuries later, Tabassian re-imagines this bridge with the help of 16th- and 17th-century works from the manuscript archives of the national libraries of Istanbul and Florence.

From dawn to dusk, music reigns among the stars of Persian civilization. The traditional music of Iran, unique to the Orient, is the fruit of a mystical heritage with a fascinating capacity for constant regeneration. In Under the Persian Musical Sky, Kayhan Kalhor, an uncontested master of this tradition, joins Kiya Tabassian on a journey through an immense musical universe. Carrying on tradition while uncovering the future, they make poetry that sings of times both old and new, and contribute to a culture that is in full swing.
