About Etienne Lafrance
Quebec double bassist Etienne Lafrance is an eclectic, curious and passionate artist. He is equally at home in classical music, chanson, improvised music and world music.
After receiving his basic training at the Conservatoire de musique de Québec, he went on to perfect his skills at the Institut international François Rabbath in Paris, where he holds soloist and teacher diplomas. Every summer, he teaches at the Domaine Forget Music Academy and with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. He also gives master classes abroad, notably in Australia and the United States. He teaches at Vanier College.
Etienne was a member of the Orchestre symphonique de Québec for more than twenty years, most of them as assistant double bass soloist. He now works as a freelance musician with a number of ensembles, including the Orchestres symphoniques de Montréal, Québec, Longueuil, Sherbrooke and Trois-Rivières, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Orchestre classique de Montréal, I Musici, Violons du Roy, Caprice, Les 9 de Montréal, SMCQ, Sinfonia de Lanaudière, GFN Productions, and others.He is invited to appear as a soloist in recitals, performing original works, transcriptions and his own compositions.
Active in jazz and improvised music, he is a regular collaborator of Marianne Trudel and Yves Léveillé, among others. He also forms a duo with guitarist Simon Proulx. In world music, he is a member of the Oktoecho collective.
